Pest description and crop damage The black bean aphid is a dark-bodied aphid, 1/16 inch long, that sporadically reaches damaging levels, most often late in the season. Infestations usually occur as scattered hot spots or along edges rather than uniformly across the entire field. Colonies can produce massive amounts of honeydew, which causes a black, sooty mold to cover the leaves.The green peach aphid is yellowish green and teardrop-shape. Its most important damage is as a vector of virus diseases rather than by feeding injury through sucking sap.
Sampling and thresholds No formal economic thresholds exist for green peach aphid insecticide treatment decisions.
Management—biological controlAphids are attacked by a large variety of predatory and parasitic insects as well as by a fungus disease. See the publication PNW 343, Beneficial Insects Associated with Pacific Northwest Crops, for descriptions of common natural enemies. (See page i of this book for ordering information.) If natural enemies are absent, consider an insecticide application if bean aphids are on most leaves and if colonies cover 20 to 40 percent of leaf surface.
Management—chemical control1. aldicarb (Temik 15G NW, Temik 15G Lock'n Load) at 1.05 to 2.1 lb ai/a. PHI 90 days, 120 days if tops are fed to livestock. Do not use tops as food for humans. Do not make more than one at-planting and two postemergence applications per crop. Do not exceed a total of 4.95 lb ai/a per season.At planting (or within 1 week before planting: Drill granules 1 to 3 inches below seedline. Granules can be placed into the seed furrow if rate does not exceed 1.05 lb ai/a. Repeat applications are required for continued protection against aphids vectoring viruses.Postemergence: Apply granules to both sides of plant row and immediately work into the soil or cover with soil. Or, for furrow irrigation, side-dress granules 4 to 8 inches to water-furrow side of plant row and at furrow depth. Irrigate soon after application. Apply within 60 days after planting. Repeat applications are required for continued protection against aphids vectoring viruses. Do not make any postemergence applications if 4.05 to 4.95 lb ai/a was applied at planting or within 1 week before planting.2. azadirachtin (Azatin XL) at 0.02 to 0.033 lb ai/a. Foliar application. For green peach aphid suppression only.3. Beauveria bassiana (Mycotrol ES: live spores of an insect-killing fungus) at 0.25 to 1 quart product/a. PHI zero days. Typically requires 7 to 10 days after first spray to see control. Begin treatment at first appearance of pest. Apply at 5- to 10-day intervals for as long as pest pressure persists.4. diazinon (Diazinon 4E, Diazinon 5WB, Diazinon 50WP, Diazinon AG 600 WBC, Diazinon AG 500) at 0.375 to 0.5 lb ai/a. PHI 14 days. 24-hr REI. Do not apply more than five times per season. Tops may be fed to beef and dairy animals. Minimum of 7 days between applications.5. endosulfan (Endosulfan 50WSB, Thiodan 3E, Thiodan 50WP) at 0.5 to 1 lb ai/a. PHI 30 days. Green peach aphid only. Do not feed treated tops to livestock. Do not apply more than twice per year. Do not exceed a maximum of 2 lb ai/a per year.6. horticultural oil (Concern Spray Oil, Ultra-Fine Oil); see label for rates. PHI zero days.7. insecticidal soap (M-Pede and others); see label for rates. PHI zero days. For stand-alone use (black bean aphid) or in combination with other labelled insecticides (green peach aphid). Wet spray must contact aphid to be effective; no residual control after spray dries. Do not apply more than 5 lb ai/a per season.11. oxydemeton-methyl (Metasystox-R) at 0.375 to 0.75 lb ai/a. PHI 30 days for harvest or feeding of tops. Do not apply more than two times per season.12. phorate (Phorate 20G, Thimet 20G)—At planting: Apply at 0.67 to 0.9 oz ai/1,000 row feet. PHI 30 days. Do not feed tops or silage to dairy cattle. Do not place granules in direct contact with seed. Drill to side of seed or band over seed.Postemergence: Apply at 0.975 to 1.5 lb ai/a. Apply to foliage when plants are dry. Apply only one postemergence treatment per season.
