Common and scientific names: Rangeland Mormon Cricket (Anabrus simplex) 

Pest description and crop damage Flightless, heavy-bodied crickets that feed on many range plants as well as on small grains and alfalfa.  They migrate from pastures into crop fields during outbreak years.

 Management – chemical controls

  1. carbaryl bait (2%).  PHI 14 days.  Apply by ground when migrations occur.

 

  1. malathion ULV at 8 fl oz/a.  PHI zero days.  Apply by air when hatch is complete.  Do not apply if rain is imminent.  Most effective at air temperature above 70oF.
  1. Dimilin 2 L. OR, WA, ID 24c.  Use on rangeland, field borders, fence rows, roadsides, farmsteads, and CRP lands.  Must be applied to early stages (second to third instars.)  Not to exceed 1 fl oz/a per year.
